In 1928, Texaco became the first US oil company to sell gasoline in all 48 states (at the time!) under one brand name. As travel became more affordable and easy, Americans began to recognize their favorite products wherever they went - from food to clothing, and even gasoline. In 1937, Texaco commissioned Walter Dorwin Teague to design a modern service station. The result - a white building with green trim, different bays for different services, and large plate glass windows looking into the store's interior - became standard across the country.
This miniature gas station model features a design very similar to Teague's, with a white exterior, blue and green trim, and red "TEXACO" letters sitting above each bay. The detail is exquisite, from the colors on the gas pumps to the stacks of tires and oil cans near the service station entrance. You almost expect the Man with the Star to come waltzing out of the door to wash your windshield and check your tires!
It is close to HO scale, but I am not sure. The gas pump is 1" high.
From the box: "When the first Model T rolled off the assembly line, American life rolled off in a new direction. In fact, it changed the American way of life forever. Gas stations sprung up on the newly paved highways, not the sterile, impersonal self-service stations we have today. In those halcyon days (when the service attendant not only filled the tank, but washed your windshield, checked your oil and put air in your tires) each station was an architectural marvel. From the indigenous architecture of the Texaco stations with their striking trademark and the fabulous Art Deco designs of the "independents", to the magnificent details of our two Limited Editions, this important addition to our Roadside, U.S.A. Collection is a "must" for all serious nostalgia buffs. Artist/designer David Stravitz painstakingly re-creates these replicas capturing every bit of dazzling detail. We cordially invite you to take a ride with us. Don't worry, there's no fear of running out of gas; not when you're traveling along Roadside, U.S.A."
From the brochure: "Texaco No. 3 - Circa 1940's (Artist's interpretation). During the 1940s the designs of gas stations were blends of past designs; still brimming with colorful Art Deco details and sleekness of line of the 30's, but softened with the addition of canopies revived from the 1920's."
